Michael Dougherty’s “Trick r Treat” is a Halloween anthology that combines four different stories that have a common element. This movie combines the scaring tactics of classic horror films along with its unique storyline and narration to deliver a good scare to its audience.
Thelma (2017, Joachim Trier)
This Norwegian film plays around with tropes of Hollywood supernatural genre tropes and twists it to deliver a masterfully unsettling story. “Thelma” is a gripping thriller that delivers a slow burn at first but proceeds to take its audience by surprise as it develops. This movie is for those looking to have a chill movie night without too much stress.
Mother! (2017, Darren Aronofsky)
Mother! is a thought-provoking film that does not particularly cater to the tastes of mainstream film lovers. This film is a thought-provoking masterpiece that raises questions about humanity and all its ambiguity. It is ultimately artistic in style and narration, and some people hate it, while a lot claim to love it. Either way, you should give this movie a watch and see for yourself.
Evil Dead (2013, Fede Alvarez)
This 2013 film is a remake of “The Evil Dead” from 1981 directed by Sam Raimi. What makes this remake special is it completely leaves the humor and campiness of the first film and replaces it with gore, brutality, and violence. If you’re a huge fan of supernatural elements and gory films, this is a must-watch for you!
The Loved Ones (2013, Sean Byrne)
This movie holds a lot of promise as Sean Byrne’s directorial debut. Despite reusing old premises of teen torture gory movies, it places an interesting take to it all which makes it an entirely interesting film. If you enjoyed watching “Carrie” or “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, you will definitely love this one!
Bone Tomahawk (2015, S. Craig Zahler)
If you loved the overall theme of “Westworld,” you will probably love this cowboy-horror film! This is one of the few horror films that are set in the Old Wild West of America, giving the term “wild west” a completely different meaning. It combines elements from classic “Western” movies with unsettling images of gore and violence and creates an unsettling story. It gives a modern twist on an American classic! Definitely worth watching.
1922 (2017, Zak Hilditch)
1922 is an adaptation of Stephen King novella, and while film adaptation of King’s works do not really live up to expectations set before it, this film certainly hits all the right marks. Hilditch’s amazing storytelling along with the superb acting of Thomas Jane creates a very gripping film. Filled with surprising twists and even shocking images, this movie is something you should see this month!
The Babadook (2014, Jennifer Kent)
“The Babadook” relies on real horror rather than cheap jump scares to be actually scary. It uses themes of superstition and blends it with reality seamlessly to create a visually compelling and narratively unsettling film. Every second of this movie is gripping and disturbing and all of it builds up to an intense climax. For those looking for a good scare this Halloween season, this movie is a must-watch!
