How can education technology overcome the challenges in rural and isolated communities?

There is no denying that education can be hard to reach for many rural children. Rural children often have fewer opportunities compared to their peers in urban areas, and there are other problems including a lack of teachers which leads to poor quality of education and high dropout rates. However, there are specific ways to help mitigate these problems, including educational technology. How can technology help improve the education system in poor, rural, and isolated areas?

Technology increases productivity– One of the main problems in rural areas is the lack of access to modern learning tools including digital devices and platforms. This causes extreme unproductivity and forces both teachers and students to put extra effort than what is necessary in finishing their tasks. Teachers and kids can stay up late for as long as they can and still end up not getting enough information with the limited resources available to them.

Therefore, digital platforms and devices should be advocated and implemented. It will enhance teaching and learning in rural schools and communities using technology as the primary teaching method. If you feel your government isn’t doing enough, speak up and advocate changes and support organizations that push for technological advances in these areas.  It feels good to take action to help mitigate problems being faced by these kids, even small steps. And it is important to talk about these issues to raise awareness and increase the chances of improving their educational situation and overall way of life.

The lack of quality teachers poses a problem in these areas and the best way to solve this is to train teachers about technology– It is important to impart adequate training to teachers on how to go digital and how to operate certain platforms and devices that will help in children’s learning. Technology also makes it possible for teachers to deliver lessons and information to their students remotely across several locations. If budget is a problem, there are loads of available low-cost devices and online resources that can provide opportunities for teachers.

Another crucial factor that needs to be looked at is the infrastructure of the schools. The infrastructure should be renovated and empowered more to allow uninterrupted electricity and internet setup. This way, the introduction to digital technology would be seamless.

Digital technology helps eliminate disinterest in studies– Since there are loads of interactive videos, educational games, and other fun learning online activities that can be used as digital tools, students are less likely to get demotivated, and they’ll likely be more attentive.

Limited access to proper Education is one of the most complex issues that plague rural areas and introducing and implementing technological approaches can have a huge difference. To get more insights on technology, subscribe to our newsletter here!
